Fund Crosses Threshold Again

Lembaga Tabung Haji has become a substantial shareholder of Focus Point Holdings Bhd, Malaysia’s listed optical and eye care retail chain, after acquiring 570,000 ordinary shares on July 21. The transaction lifted the Islamic pilgrims’ fund’s direct interest from 4.96% to 5.056%.

The disclosed stake comprises 31.078 million ordinary shares in total. Of these, 23.18 million are registered directly in TH’s name, while the balance of 7.898 million shares, including the newly acquired block, are held through Citigroup Nominees (Tempatan) Sdn Bhd on behalf of Lembaga Tabung Haji (Eastspring). The percentage calculation excludes 1.34 million ordinary shares the company has bought back and retained as treasury shares.

A Repeat Crossing

This is not the first time TH has crossed the substantial shareholder threshold in Focus Point. The fund previously held substantial shareholder status for a brief four-day period in late January and early February 2025, after buying a 0.05% stake, before disposing of 500,000 shares and falling back below the 5% mark. The pattern suggests TH has treated the 5% threshold as an active trading band around Focus Point rather than a fixed long-term position, consistent with typical fund-level portfolio rebalancing among Malaysian institutional investors.

Ownership Structure Remains Concentrated

Despite TH’s renewed presence on the substantial shareholder register, control of Focus Point remains firmly with its founding family. CEO Datuk Liaw Choon Liang’s family investment vehicle, Sustain Focus Sdn Bhd, holds the largest block at 28.46%, followed by Liaw’s wife and fellow executive director Goh Poi Eong at 12.88% and Liaw’s direct holding of 8.86%. Franchise agency Perbadanan Nasional Bhd holds a further 8.45%. Combined, insider and founder-linked entities continue to hold a majority of the company.

Company Profile

Focus Point operates a nationwide optical and eye care retail chain, offering eyewear and eye examination services. It is a constituent of both the Bursa Malaysia Quality 50 Index and the Bursa Malaysia Quality 50 Shariah Index, a status that keeps it within the eligible universe for Shariah-compliant institutional mandates such as those managed by TH.
